What Are the New Number Plates?

The digital number plates introduced by NTSA (the National Transport and Safety Authority) feature several enhanced security and tracking elements:

Microchip & Unique Serial Number: Each plate contains a chip and unique NTSA serial number tied to the vehicle's chassis. This helps prevent swapping, forgery, or reuse fraud.
QR Code: Scannable code on the plate for law enforcement to instantly retrieve vehicle details.
Kenyan Flag, Hologram & Watermark: Visual anti-counterfeit features to make duplication difficult.

Who Must Use the New Plates & Timeline

Newly imported vehicles are assigned the new plates at the point of entry.
Existing vehicles with the old plates are required to switch to the new ones within an 18-month grace period (from launch). This includes private cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, counties, diplomatic vehicles, etc.
All public/institutional vehicles were also ordered to switch by a given deadline.

For motor vehicles (cars, pickups, buses), the new plates cost around KSh 3,000 to KSh 3,050.
For motorcycles, the fee is lower (about KSh 1,500 to 1,550).

What Authorities Check for in the New Plates

When issuing or inspecting the new plates, these are the key checks:

Vehicle details match the logbook (chassis number, engine #)
Old plates are surrendered if applicable
Vehicle owner's ID and logbook are valid

What Happens if You Don't Get the New Plate

There was a grace period of 18 months initially. After this period, using old plates may attract penalties or legal issues.
