End of an Era: DT Dobie Name Retired After 74 Years in Kenya

For over seven decades, DT Dobie was one of the most recognizable names in Kenya's motoring landscape. Founded in 1949 by British army officer David T. Dobie, the company became the go-to dealer for Mercedes-Benz, earning a reputation for luxury, reliability, and world-class service.

But in 2023, history took a new turn. DT Dobie officially merged with CFAO Motors Kenya, transferring all its assets and operations to the Toyota Tsusho-owned CFAO Group. The move was part of CFAO's strategy to simplify its African car business under a single brand identity.

As a result, DT Dobie ceased trading under its own name. However, the services, dealerships, and brand portfolios—including Mercedes-Benz—continue under CFAO Motors Kenya, which today boasts 36 branches across the country.

This exit is not isolated. Earlier in the same year, CMC Motors, another giant of the Kenyan auto scene, wound up its operations after over 40 years, also shutting its branches in Uganda and Tanzania.

Industry analysts say these consolidations mark a new chapter for the region's auto market: fewer dealership names, bigger global groups, and a more unified approach to sales and after-sales services.

? Buyer's Takeaway:

  • Service & Warranty: All existing service contracts, warranties, and spare parts support remain valid under CFAO Motors.
  • Brand Continuity: Mercedes-Benz, VW, Nissan Diesel, and other brands previously under DT Dobie will continue being sold and serviced.
  • Where to Go: Customers should now visit CFAO Motors branches (36 nationwide) instead of searching for DT Dobie outlets.
  • Market Insight: The consolidation may bring more efficiency and possibly wider product choices, but buyers should stay alert to changes in pricing and after-sales terms as global groups restructure operations.
